On July 3, 1778 Captain James Cook became the first known European to reach the Hawaiian Islands. He first landed on Kaui but his more famous ties are to Kealakekua Bay on Hawaii. Cook was killed in the Bay in 1779. Today there is a monument in Cook’s honor and Kealakekua is named a Marine Life Conservation District. This level of protection for the bay is unlike many of the other spinner dolphin resting bays around Hawaii.
