Pan Am Airmail

November 22, 1935  Pan American Airlines started flying mail to Hawaii in the China Clipper class of planes. In 1936 Pan American Airlines would start flying passengers across the Pacific from San Fracisco to Hawaii in “flying boats” like the one in this photo from the China Clipper class. This new form of transportation to the Island would play a major part in establishing the Hawaiian Islands as a site of  mass tourism. This original visitors came to the islands to see the volcanoes. Today they take part in even more forms of nature-based tourism including whale watches and spinner dolphin tours.
